In August, Cocoa City Council approved an ordinance requested by long-time Cocoa business Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC to amend the zoning district for the Grissom Industrial Business District to allow for outdoor propulsion testing facilities.  The request was made in support of Rocket Crafters, Inc. to engage in static test firings of its hybrid rocket engine technology at the site owned by Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC.

A strategic partnership was formed between Rocket Crafters, Inc. and Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC, which provides manufacturing support on the project, necessary to conduct the test fires on this revolutionary new hybrid rocket engine on the property adjacent to the Coastal Steel primary facility.

Rocket Crafters, Inc. has developed a large-scale hybrid rocket engine that will change the way we access space by making it safe, reliable, and affordable, facilitating the expansion and growth of space commerce.

Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC specializes in rapid response manufacturing, fabrication and field services to a wide range of space, aerospace, and defense clients across the globe.  “Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC and Coastal Steel, Inc. are extremely pleased with the level of support provided by the City of Cocoa in the successful initiative to bring Rocket Crafters, Inc. and the associated manufacturing opportunities to our community,” said Dale Coxwell, President of Coastal Steel Manufacturing, LLC.

By the addition of the proposed use by special exception approval, the City would be able to recruit businesses looking to locate on Florida's Space Coast and would be compatible with Brevard County's historical role in the space industry.

“I am excited to see the progressive thinking from our businesses and the efforts taken to create our own economy.  The flexibility from staff and Council to diversify the business opportunities and grow the job base within our community is paramount to our success.  This is a real step forward for Cocoa as the Space Coast continues to thrive,” said Cocoa Mayor Henry Parrish.
